Homemade Frijoles de la Olla
Tender, savory pinto beans simmered with green chiles, onion, garlic, and warm spices—an easy, comforting side or simple dinner staple.
What you’ll need
Ingredients
- 2 (15-ounce) cans pinto beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (4-ounce) can diced green chiles
- ½ cup white or yellow onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Black pepper, to taste
Step by step
Instructions
- 1
Drain and rinse the pinto beans. Dice the onion and mince the garlic.
- 2
Add the pinto beans, green chiles, diced onion, minced garlic, chicken broth, cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to a medium saucepan. Stir to combine.
- 3
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
- 4
Reduce the heat to low and maintain a gentle simmer. Cook uncovered for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion is tender and the flavors have blended.
- 5
For a creamier texture, lightly mash some of the beans against the side of the pan with a spoon. Add a splash of broth or water if the beans become too thick.
- 6
Taste and adjust the salt and black pepper before serving warm.
